Every setting for Office can be changed through the Microsoft GPO's. Businesses can now use the Citrix SD-WAN solution for Home Office users. If you use Office Add-ons, these should be included in the office layer, but can sometimes be installed in different layers with Office checked as a prerequisite layer during layer creation. Note that some Office add-ons, like for Excel, are installed directly in the user profile, so can't be layered. User profile installations must be done in the end-user VM while logged in as the user.

In this scenario, the SD-WAN configuration can be limited to handle only the remote worker’s traffic.

For Citrix MCS and Horizon View Linked clones the Master Image/Parent VM’s should have Office Applications activated before they are snapshotted for deployment. The traffic that is delivered across the SD-WAN overlay is encrypted between the user endpoint and the Citrix Gateway. Encrypted traffic means the HDX Auto-QoS feature of SD-WAN does not work, along with SD-WAN Quality of Experience reporting for the HDX traffic. HDX Auto-QoS is designed to dynamically investigate the HDX session when delivered between the SD-WAN peers. It allows differentiation between the different channels that comprise a single HDX session. This feature is also known as Multi-Stream ICA, which enables prioritization of interactive channels above the bulk data channels, resulting in improved end-user experience.
One approach would be to place a book ended SD-WAN solution directly in the path the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops traffic. In this deployment, SD-WAN devices can provide features such as link aggregation, subsecond resiliency, and QoS to prioritize the encrypted HDX traffic over other traffic types. Users remotely connect to Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops on any device, from any location. In the Data Center network, for security, the incoming front-end traffic is isolated from back-end traffic, between the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops infrastructure servers and services.

To update Office 365, you can create a whole new Office Layer based on the current distribution or add a version to your existing Office layer and update that. If you are creating a new Office layer you just follow the instructions defined earlier in the recipe after deleting the source files that were originally downloaded by the ODK setup. If you are using these tools, just run the App Layering Optimization Builder utility and choose which Office applications are installed in the layer.
